Taxco Information
The laughing, shining town of Taxco is the artistic capital of the State
of Guerrero and possibly the oldest mining center in Spanish America.
Taxco contemplates an indescribable panorama of mountains, which look
like the green waves of a choppy sea.
Enjoy perfect weather and uniquely Mexican culture in our little city.
Taxco is simply charming. Narrow streets lead up and down the hilly
city. Santa
Prisca church is a marvel of pink quarry stone and inside, more than 20
tons of gold leaf form a dizzying tableau.
The town’s claim to fame, however, is its silver shops: Taxco has
hundreds of silver-smithing workshops, which produce much of the
country’s silver jewelry and ornamental objects. Travelers can purchase
them at the local silver market or the innumerable shops lining downtown
streets. Visitors will,
however, find the feel of colonial Mexico still in place, with plenty of
stucco buildings dotting the landscape. There are also restrictions on
any new construction, requiring that colonial themes continue to be
employed.
Taxco also hosts a month long Silver Fair, beginning in November and
continuing through December. Artists from all around the area come to
display their silver and stone workings. A literary festival also takes
place during this week. Travelers will also enjoy checking out the
nearby ruins.
The nightlife is quiet, but the surrounding mountains, and Taxco's
location, make for stunning views. Accommodation in Taxco is inexpensive
and easy to book.
Perhaps the best part of Taxco is its location, so close to the busy
cities of Cuernevaca and Mexico City. To reach the city of Taxco,
visitors may choose between taking a bus and driving there via a rental
car. From Mexico City,Taxco
is about a 3-4 hour drive. The drive from Cuernevaca is less than an
hour. By bus, the journey will take about the same amount of time. Bus
prices in Mexico are very reasonable, and service is very efficient and
comfortable.
